Ogni giorno, da dieci anni, l'assicuratore Michael McCauley (Liam Neeson) sale su un treno di
pendolari per andare al lavoro. I volti nascosti dietro libri tascabili e pesanti ventiquattrore diventano familiari
all'uomo, che dice di essere un buon osservatore oltre che un passeggero affezionato; e il solitario viaggio quotidiano
diventa quasi uno spostamento in compagnia. 
Un giorno come tanti Michael viene avvicinato dalla sedicente
psicologa Joann (Vera Farmiga), che impettita sul sedile accanto gli propone una sfida apparentemente innocua:
identificare un passeggero "fuori posto”, una persona che viaggia sullo stesso treno e risponde a determinate
caratteristiche, prima della fermata successiva. Intrigato, Michael accetta la sfida, ma finisce coinvolto in una
pericolosa cospirazione criminale che potrebbe costare la vita a lui e agli altri passeggeri del convoglio.
